KAGOSHIMA

The southernmost land in Kyushu, which possesses an active volcano brimming with the power and history of the Satsuma Domain.

Kagoshima Prefecture is best known as the location of the Satsuma feudal clan which produced many famous individuals at the end of the Edo era such as Saigo Takamori and Shimazu Nariakira. Historical spots are scattered throughout the area, like the scenic "Sengan-en" garden and "Shiroyama" the site of Saigo's demise. The area is also rich in sightseeing spots including the volcanic island "Sakurajima" located only a 15-minute boat ride from the Kagoshima city center, "Sunamushi Spa", at the famous Ibusuki hot springs where you can wash off after taking a sand bath, and "Kirishima Shrine", an ancient shrine that has protected the country since legendary times.
