Chicken Nanban

One of the reasons why I love Japan is because I absolutely love the food here.  Chicken Nanban is one of those dishes that I always look forward to.

This Chicken Nanban shop, located in Ogura in the Miyazaki Prefecture is super popular with the locals and with travellers as well. I snuck in early before midday to beat the crowds.

The establishment is small; a cosy two-storey restaurant with cute red and white awnings and a simple, no fuss menu. Evidently, the diners who line up at this restaurant are here for one thing - chicken nanban!

And it did not disappoint. The key to amazing chicken nanban is obviously the chicken - it should be full of flavour and tender. And the sauce should be richly satisfying but not too intense that it pushes you over the edge.

This clever outfit serves each chicken nanban dish with a small side of spaghetti and a salad acting as a bit of a palate cleanser. And of course, rice comes with the dish too but I think the meal is quite satisfying without.

Try to go during the weekdays when it isn’t so busy and get there a little early to avoid queuing.
