Visiting the Pottery Villages

Kyushu is the birthplace of Japanese porcelain. There are many production sites, which popular with visitors from home and abroad.
Arita ware and Imari ware are extremely popular, not only in Japan but in other countries as well. Arita ware is said to date back to the sixteenth century, when potters taken from the Korean Peninsula started to produce porcelains. Arita ware was particularly fascinating to the European aristocrats. Regarding Imari ware, “Nabeshima,” the ultimate beauty in pottery and porcelain, was created for presentation to the Shogun family in the mid-seventeenth century. Today’s artisans continue to use the same secret techniques and designs.
Karatsu ware is characterized by its color, which changes gradually through use. It’s considered one of the three great potteries in Japan. Koishiwara ware is characterized by its unique technique, which was awarded the grand prize at the World Craft Exhibition. Onta ware is manually produced from crushing through firing, and is popular for its simple charm. Hasami ware is beautiful white porcelain with indigo underglazing. Mikawachi ware is famous for its karakoe (Chinese image). The familiar Satsuma ware is roughly divided into two categories: Kuromon (black Satsuma) and Shiromon (white Satsuma).
