Walking in Traditional Towns

Traditional Japanese buildings and old Western buildings stand side by side in harmony. The streetscape is full of nostalgic memories.
There still remain old houses and streets from the Edo era (1603-1867) in the historic town of Usuki. In Nioza, located southwest of the Usuki Castle ruins along a narrow, sloping flagstone street, are samurai residences and temples. In Bungotakada, an area called Showa no Machi (Town of the Showa Era), renovated to be a 600-meter-long mall in the Showa 30's, brings back fond memories of that period.
Mojiko (Port of Moji) was opened in 1889 and flourished as an international trade port until early in the Showa era. The area around Mojiko Station, now developed as Mojiko Retro Town, is a famous tourist spot with a Taisho Roman atmosphere. Here you can still many Western buildings from those days, including the red-brick old Moji Customs, the old O.S.K. Lines Ltd. buildings with their attractive Victorian appearance, and the old Moji Mitsui Club, a social club for Mitsui & Co., Ltd. where the Einsteins once stayed.
