Nagasaki, the city that is home to Dejima, the only area of public trade during the period of national isolation, had flourished as an international trade port since the old times. The place was strongly affected by the old Western culture. Western-style houses in Minamiyamate and Higashiyamate are full of exoticism, and are flavored with the blend of Japanese and Western cultures.
Nagasaki was the central place of Christian teachings from the end of the sixteenth century in Japan. Shimabara is known for the Shimabara Rebellion, in which peasants rose in revolt due to heavy taxes and the suppression of Christians. In Amakusa, many people carried on their Christianity in secret. There are also numerous church buildings, including Urakami Cathedral and Oura Catholic Church in Nagasaki, Sakitsu Church in Amakusa, Dozaki Church in Goto, and Francis Xavier Memorial Church in Hirado.
