Amagase Onsen

Amagase is known as one of the three major hot spring towns in the Bungo Area along with Beppu and Yufuin. It is a renowned hot spring town with a long history of about 1,300 years, whose name can be found in an ancient book from the 8th century, which suggests the opening of the hot spring dates even further back in history. The hot springs in the area are varied in spring quality from sulfur, chloride to hydrogen carbonate.
Many of the hot springs are located on Kusu River, the pure stream reachable within a walking distance from JR Amagase Station. Especially famous among them are outdoor hot springs on the river bank. You can enjoy a special open feel at one of those outdoor hot springs as if you are bathing in the river. Bathing in non-recycled hot spring water while enjoying the murmuring of the river and the star-filled sky will surely give you ultimate comfort.
There are about 20 hot spring inns along the river. It can give you a sort of surreal feel just to look at those the bridges stretching from the atmospheric inns across the river. Speaking of something “surreal,” it may also be a little unordinary for you to experience mixed bathing in an outdoor hot springs. You may feel a little awkward at first, but it would be a great opportunity to fully open and relax your mind and soul in such an extraordinary atmosphere.

Amagase onsen is known for the open air baths along the river. Women may feel uncomfortable about them, but it is such a freeing feeling and feels great! The quality of the onsen is very good, and I felt there were many properties beneficial for the body. An old onsen inn is tastefully charming.
