Castle wall standing at 325mt. high plateau. Oka Castle is known as impregnable castle all through Sengoku era/Edo Period.
In twilight, or cherry trees veiled in haze during spring, stonewall only reflects prosperity and decline of history.
While walking around Ruins of village in mountain valley and devoting yourself to breath of nature, bustle of vegetation plays song.

JR Asaji Station → Yujuku Park (1.8km) → Fuko-ji Temple (4.0km) → Camilia bushes, Radio Museum (5.7km) → Sokawa Columnar Joint (6.9km) → Oka Castle Shimobaru Gate (8.1km) → Castle Keep (Taki Rentaro Statue)(8.6km) → Nearby Doorway (9.1km) → Oka Castle Car Park (pay to park)(10.6km) → Taki Rentaro Memorial Museum (11.1km) → Jurokurakan (11.3km) → JR Bungo Taketa Station (11.8km)

  • 1.Yujuku Park
    A park featuring the remains of Oka Castle. The park is well known for the colour of the autumn leaves come the fall.

  • 2.Fuko-ji Temple
    The Fuko-ji Temple is famous for its stone buddha carved into the cliff faces. The buddha are carved 20 meters high and are the biggest in Japan. The temple is also famous for its blooming hydrangeas which are best seen in June.

  • 3.Sokawa Columnar Joint
    90,000 years ago in a large erruption of Mount Aso, a hugepyroclastic flow found its way into the Sokawa River and when the molten rock hardened, it created a columnar joint.

  • 4.Oka Castle Remains
    Oka Castle was a castle given to Hideshige Nakagawa, the retainer of the then shogun Hideyoshi Toyotomi. The castle was torn down in the Meiji Period but the stone wall fortifications still remain.

  • 5.Taketa prospered as the economic heart of the Okuhan government during the Edo Period. The remains of the old buildings still exist and this castle town is full of history.

  • 6.Not far from Bungo-Taketa Station is the town’s onsen. The onsen features a family bath, an open bath as well as a sauna amongst other things. At the entrance is a foot bath.

*During the course there are no restaurants. For a group of over 10, lunchboxes are available (500yen per person, pick up at Asaji Station). Additonally an offer of lunch is sometimes made by local residents in the rest area of the Fuko-ji Temple.

Daimaru Ryokan Sotoyu ”Lemonade Onsen House”

Daimaru Ryokan’s sotoyu (outside bath) is teeming with tiny bubbles which have given it the alternate name of the ”Lemonade Onsen House.” There are segregated baths as well as an ouside bath, and 3 private rental baths. It is the perfect place to refresh your heart and mind.
