Fukuoka Prefecture Event Calendar


The Dontaku Festival (Fukuoka-shimin-no-matsuri Hakata-dontaku-minato-
matsuri)
This festival is held on May 3 and 4 during the Golden Week holidays. People parade through streets, some wearing costumes and others performing "Teodori (Hand Dance)."

Kokura Gion Daiko (Kokura-gion-daiko)
This festival, a signature summer event, lasts four days. The festival’s highlight is the great taiko (Japanese drum) performance, which is held on the third day at Kokura Castle.

Hakata Gion Yamakasa (Hakata-gion-yamakasa)
The festival held in Kushida Shrine, the general tutelary shrine of Hakata. It’s known as a festival that marks the coming of summer, and is considered one of the three biggest Gion festivals in Japan.

Saga Prefecture Event Calendar


Arita Ceramics Fair (Arita-touki-ichi)
One of the best events of its kind, the Arita Ceramics Fair attracts more than a million pottery lovers each year, along with the opening of about 600 shops.

Saga International Balloon Festa
One of the largest international hot-air balloon festivals in Asia. Hot-air balloons in myriad colors hover in the sky over Saga.

Karatsu Kunchi Festival (Karatsu-kunchi)
This annual festival is held each autumn at Karatsu Shrine. Giant hikiyama (floats) are carried on rails through the old castle town while people shout gleefully.

Nagasaki Prefecture Event Calendar


Huis Ten Bosch Tulip Festival
This annual festival is a showcase for 400 varieties of tulips. The town in Huis Ten Bosch is filled with a million flowers.

Tsushima Arirang Festival (Tsushima-arirang-matsuri)
An event for Japan-South Korea exchanges. The youth group plans and operates it, while the local government and citizens get together to hold the event.

Nagasaki Kunchi Festival (Nagasaki-kunchi)
A festival held in Suwa Shrine in Nagasaki City. Each year five to seven towns are designated as odoricho (dance towns), and people from those towns perform the “Hono-Odori (Dedication Dance).”

Kumamoto Prefecture Event Calendar


The Fire Festival (Aso-no-himatsuri)
Himojiyaki (flaming characters) in Aso. At this event, the local performance handed down since the early days of Aso is shown.

Yamaga Lantern Festival (Yamaga-tourou-matsuri)
This is known as a summer fantasy festival in Yamaga City in Kumamoto, where people dance gracefully wearing gold paper lanterns on their heads.

Kumamoto Castle (Kumamoto-jou)
Kumamoto Castle marks its 400th anniversary in 2007. Enjoyable seasonal events will be held to celebrate this milestone.

Tenryo Hita Doll Festival (Tenryou-hita)
Hina dolls and tools that remain in the old families of Hita City are displayed to the public. You will be surprised at the splendor that has been handed down from generation to generation, from the Edo era till the present day.

Hot Spring Festival (Beppu-hattou-onsen-matsuri)
An onsen (hot spring) festival showcasing the spring in Beppu. The main street in front of the train station is the site of this festival. Events including an onsen dance and a mikoshi festival are held.

Oita Tanabata Festival (Oita-tanabata)
A signature summer event in Oita. The mall is decorated with colorful tanabata ornaments. The festival is exciting from start to finish, when on the final evening a fireworks show is held.

Miyazaki Prefecture Event Calendar


Miyazaki Flower Festa
This festival is subtitled “Light and Wind Fantasy,” welcoming you with a million beautiful flowers in 80 varieties.

Miyazaki Jingu Grand Festival (Miyazaki-jingu-taisai)
This is the largest festival in Miyazaki Prefecture. Yokagura dances, taiko, local performances and kagura dance take place here, for the enjoyment of a loyal following.

Yokagura dance (Yokagura)
A ritual ceremony to pray for a good harvest, it is held in Takachiho from the end of November until the early February. Yokagura has been designated by the government as an Important Intangible Folk-cultural Property.

Kagoshima Prefecture Event Calendar


Hatsu-Uma Festival (Hatsu-uma-sai)
Held each year at the Kagoshima Jingu Shrine on the Sunday closest to “Hatsuuma” (January 18 based on the lunar calendar), it features about 30 suzukake uma (horses decorated with bells) that perform dance steps.

Ohara Festival (Matsuri)
People go dancing to the folk songs “Ohara-bushi” and “Han'ya-bushi” through the bustling streets. Each year about 22,000 people participate by dancing during the two-day festival.

Yagoro-don festival (Yagorou-don-matsuri)
A grand festival held at the Iwakawa Hachiman Shrine in Osumi Town. A huge effigy called “Yagoro-don,” which stands 4m 85cm tall, is carried through the streets.
