KASHIMA GATALYMPICS

The Kashima Gatalympics is an event held in the mudflats of the Ariake Sea in Kashima City, Saga Prefecture. The event takes place every year at the end of May. Participants in the event take part in a series of unique games on the mudflats where they become wholly covered in mud. The event itself is very similar to that of a silly game show and features games such as mud sumo or surf board races. It is the most famous event in Saga Prefecture, with both Japanese and foreign nationals taking part. The first Gatalympic was held in May of 1985 in an attempt to help put Kashima City on the map after the Saga Prefectural Government had outlined Kashima was not to have a highway or Shinkansen train connection in 1984. As a result of the Gatalympics the conservation status of the mudflats has improved due to better maintenance and protection.
