KUMAHACHI ABURAYA STATUE

Kumahachi Aburayama is the name of the man depicted in the mysterious statue found outside of Beppu Station. Originally born in Uwajima, Ehime Prefecture in 1863, Kumahachi started life as a rice wholesaler before travelling to the United States in the bowels of a ship. Kumahachi went across the USA, Canada and Mexico for three years until he returned to Japan as a 38 year old. When he was 46 Kumahachi moved to Beppu where he began running a hotel, which eventually became a first class hotel attracting wealthy clients from all over the world. He used promotion techniques that he had learned in the US and applied them to promoting the Beppu and Yufuin onsen areas. He even resorted to throwing leaflets out of a plane in Osaka. He was also the first in Japan to introduce tour busses with female guides, and through this the onsen Hell Tour became ultra popular. Kumahachi died in 1935, and due to his services in making Beppu and other onsen areas in Oita popular tourist spots, he has his statue erected at Beppu Station.
