KARASHI MENTAIKO (MARINATED POLLACK ROE)

“Karashi Mentaiko”, which is a typical Hakata gift, was first sold in Japan by Mr. Toshio Kawahara who established Fukuya in Nakasu Hakata in 1949. Mr. Kawahara had the desire to expand the mentaiko industry. He shared its manufacturing methods generously with other people. Now the industry has spread far and wide. Mentaiko originated from a popular Korean food. The “Tarako(roe)” is removed from a female Walleye pollack, salted and seasoned with special Japanese seasoning. One of its characteristics is that chilly pepper is used, so it’s hot.
