MT. UNZEN DISASTER MEMORIAL HALL (GAMADASU DOME)

In November 1990, the eruptions of Mt. Unzen Fugen began after lying dormant for 198 years. They continued sporadically until June 1996 when the official declaration was announced that the eruptions had come to an end. The Mt. Unzen Disaster Memorial Hall is a museum commemorating this tremendous volcanic disaster and showing what happened to the area and how people confronted it. The museum has the Great Heisei Eruption Theater with a 14m diameter dome screen, where people can experience how the lava and avalanches of earth and rocks affected the area with dynamic pictures and sound, and also the ‘Road of Pyroclastic Flow’, which uses lighting equipment to show the speed of the pyroclastic flow during the eruption, which is said to have been 100 km/ h. There are some more facilities to raise people’s consciousness in regard to disaster prevention, such as the Shimabara Taihen Theatre, which shows a play of an eruption which occurred in the Edo era, expressed in the form of an old tale with Kabuki technique and also the exhibition of electric poles and telephone boxes etc, which were burned and damaged by the eruption. There is an open space with lawn and flowers around the site, where the Ariake Sea can be observed.
