Nagasaki, Unzen, Amakusa Area

The Nagasaki/Unzen/Amakusa area is a must-see, including the town and its exotic culture, which has been heavily influenced by the West. The views here are especially beautiful.
Nagasaki is an international crossroads, renowned for its Oura Catholic Church, Peace Park, Nagasaki Shinchi Chinatown, etc. The night view from Mt. Inasa is one of the best in Japan. Unzen is international too, having been developed as a summer resort for visitors from abroad. Christian churches and historic sites are scattered throughout Amakusa, and are enhanced by the gorgeous views.

Amakusa Shiro's Battle Flag
Designated as a national important cultural property, it's one of the three great flags of Christendom in the world. The flag is housed within the Amakusa Shiro Memorial Hall.
Huis Ten Bosch
A theme park known as a kingdom of flowers and canals. Here you'll find hundreds of thousands of flowers, which each variety contributing to a particular season.
Dejima
A fan-shaped, artificial island, which during the Edo ero functioned as the only base for trading with Western countries. The atmosphere of those days has been faithfully recreated.
Nagasaki Museum of History and Culture
This museum displays about 48,000 historical items, including ancient documents and local documents as property of the Prefecture and City of Nagasaki.
Shimabara
An old castle town that faces the Ariake Sea with welling fresh water and hot-springs. There are many samurai residences, which make for a regal and exciting atmosphere.
Unzen Onsen
Since the area flourished as a resort for foreigners until the early Showa era, it has a distinctly modern atmosphere for a mountain hot spring.
Shippoku Ryori (Shippoku Dish)
This cuisine is said to have originated during the seventeenth century by blending the Chinese dietary life and the Japanese culture. People sit at a circular table to eat it.
Champon, Sara-udon
Invented during the Meiji era. It's piled high with more than 10 kinds of products from land and sea, including flavorful noodles, pork and shrimp.
