Kumamoto, Kikuchi, Tamana Area

Each hot spring here has been developed in the Kikuchi River areas, which are rich with cultural buildings and beautiful natural scenery.
Kumamoto Castle has cultural buildings such as Suizenji Jojuen Park. Kikuchi Suigen (Kikuchi Water Source) in a valley richly endowed with nature is all the more beautiful in the seasons of fresh greenery and golden leaves. There is also Kikuchi Onsen, which is popular among women as the springs for longevity and makeup, and Tamana Onsen, which is one of the most famous radium springs.

Kumamoto Castle
One of the three greatest castles in Japan, and a symbol of Kumamoto. Two castle keeps, large and small, were restored to show its former influence.
Shirakawa Suigen (Shirakawa Water Source)
The riverhead of the Shirakawa River, a “Class A" river. It's a famous fine water spot popular among tourists. The flow of spring water is impressive, at 60 tons per minute.
Front Approach in Shakain
It has 3,333 stone steps, the most in Japan. Shakain is known as one of the three greatest Koya temples.
Kikuchi Onsen
A hot spring known as the “back room" in Kumamoto. Called “the spring for longevity" and “the spring for makeup," it's popular among women.
Tamana Onsen
One of the most famous radium springs, it's called “the spring for beauties" due to the soft nature of its water.
Suizenji Jojuen Park
Commonly known as “Suizenji Park," it's a garden that emulates the Fifty-Three Stages of the Tokaido.
Kumamoto Ramen
Characterized by fatty tonkotsu (pork bone) soup with chopped garlic floating on top.
Horse Meat Dishes
The word “meat" usually means horse meat in Kumamoto. Healthful and low in fat, it's served in various types of dishes including raw horse meat, yakiniku and sushi.
