Ibusuki, Kagoshima Area
A popular sightseeing spot with the only natural sand bath in Japan. Here you can experience the magnificence of a volcano and the history that has developed around it.
Ibusuki is known for its natural sand bath, while Yamagawa Onsen is known for its air-open bath facing the sea. The island volcano of Sakurajima emits plumes of smoke and ash. The Dolphin Port commercial complex faces Sakurajima. The area is rich in sightseeing spots too, including samurai residences and Chiran, the base for a highly trained special attack unit.
Chiran Town
This is Little Kyoto in Satsuma, where you can still find traces of the Edo era. It's fun to stroll through the town and see samurai residences, etc.
Monument to St. Xavier's Landing
This location features a monument at the site where Francis Xavier arrived in Kagoshima and began preaching Christianity for the first time in Japan.
Shoko Shuseikan
This museum teaches visitors about the relationship between the Shimazu family and modern Japan. Materials such as the family tree of the Shimazu and relics are displayed.
Satsuma Cuisine
Local cuisine served for samurai and even the lord of the Satsuma domain at the end of the Edo era. It features dynamic dishes such as pork ribs boiled in shochu.
Kagoshima Berkshire Pork Cuisine
The Kagoshima Berkshire is a variety of pork that's very popular throughout Japan. It's often used for shabu-shabu and pork cutlets.
Sakurajima Onsen
A hot spring believed to have originated when hot water sprang forth upon the eruption of Sakurajima. It includes the Ryujin Open-Air Bath, where you bathe in a white yukata.
Ibusuki Onsen
Located at the headland of the Satsuma Peninsula. The natural sand bath is well known. Get in, and you'll soon perspire from every pore.
Yamagawa Onsen and Mt. Kaimon
A hot-spring site at the southern end of the Satsuma Peninsula, famous for its open-air bath and exquisite views. The view of magnificent Mt. Kaimon, also called Satsuma Fuji, is beyond description.
