Ibusuki, Kagoshima Area

A popular sightseeing spot with the only natural sand bath in Japan. Here you can experience the magnificence of a volcano and the history that has developed around it.

Ibusuki is known for its natural sand bath, while Yamagawa Onsen is known for its air-open bath facing the sea. The island volcano of Sakurajima emits plumes of smoke and ash. The Dolphin Port commercial complex faces Sakurajima. The area is rich in sightseeing spots too, including samurai residences and Chiran, the base for a highly trained special attack unit.

A hot-spring site at the southern end of the Satsuma Peninsula, famous for its open-air bath and exquisite views. The view of magnificent Mt. Kaimon, also called Satsuma Fuji, is beyond description.

Hatsu-Uma Festival (Hatsu-uma-sai)

Hatsu-Uma Festival (Hatsu-uma-sai)
Held each year at the Kagoshima Jingu Shrine on the Sunday closest to "Hatsuuma" (January 18 based on the lunar calendar), it features about 30 suzukake uma (horses decorated with bells) that perform dance steps.

Ohara Festival (Matsuri)

Ohara Festival (Matsuri)
People go dancing to the folk songs "Ohara-bushi" and "Han'ya-bushi" through the bustling streets. Each year about 22,000 people participate by dancing during the two-day festival.

Yagoro-don festival (Yagorou-don-matsuri)

Yagoro-don festival (Yagorou-don-matsuri)
A grand festival held at the Iwakawa Hachiman Shrine in Osumi Town. A huge effigy called "Yagoro-don," which stands 4m 85cm tall, is carried through the streets.
