Kirishima, Ebino, Hitoyoshi Area

Become one with nature as you savor the natural surroundings and seasonal flowers.
Kirishima has welling hot-springs of good quality and a rich, natural environment. Here you'll find myriad flowers in the Ikoma Plateau and an open-air bath operated by Ebino City, which commands breathtaking views from 1,200 meters above sea level. Experience the fun of nature, too, including a trip on the Kuma River, which is one of the three most rapid rivers in Japan. The trekking is great, too.

Trekking the Kirishima Mountains
Mt. Karakuni rises to a height of 1,700 meters. It's an ideal place to trek, and to savor the changing seasons.
Utase Netting Fish
You can experience the traditional art of bottom trawling using seven bag-shaped nets that drag and catch target species at the bottom of the sea.
A downstream trip on the Kuma River (rafting)
Experience this thrilling river activity on the Kuma River, one of Japan's most rapid rivers. You can even go down the river on a boat!
Hitoyoshi Onsen
Along the Kuma River, which runs east to west through the town, are many historic inns and public baths fed by hot springs.
Kirishima Onsen
Located at the foot of the Kirishima Mountains. Ryoma Sakamoto visited the hot spring with his wife on what is said to have been the first wedding tour in Japan.
Ebino Plateau Onsen
A hot spring that spouts at an elevation of 1,200 meters above sea level. Many natural springs can be found here, and they're said to be effective on rheumatism and chronic eczema.
Kurinodake Onsen
A secluded hot spring located on the slope of Mt. Kurino, at the western end of the Kirishima Mountains. It has three different hot springs.
Izumi Plain (Izumi-heiya)
The hooded crane and the white-naped crane fly to this area, where they pass the winter. The number of cranes that come to this area is about 10,000, making it the largest such gathering in Japan. The cranes stay from mid-October to late February.
Idenoyama Yusui (Spring Water of Idenoyama)
A notable site where fireflies dance to and fro in early summer. The carp dish is justly famous, but the sturgeon dish and caviar should also be experienced.
