Aso, Kuju Area (Aso)

People are drawn to this area by the magnificent natural scenery, and for the relaxation provided by one of the finest hot-spring areas in the world.
Aso/Kuju, certainly one of the best hot-spring areas, offers a combination of large and small hot-springs. The area is highlighted by one of the largest calderas in the world in Mt. Aso and Kusasenri, and by the beautiful flowers of the Kuju Plateau. The Yamanami Highway connecting Aso and Beppu is a popular drive.

Mt. Aso
One of the largest calderas (large volcanic depressions) in the world, it has a circumference of 128 kilometers.
Aso Farmland
A natural theme park located in the mountains of Aso National Park, it offers a chance to learn while you play.
Kuju Plateau
This magnificent plain can be visited via the trans-Kyushu road known as the Yamanami Highway, which connects Beppu and Aso.
Takachiho-kyo Gorge
An abrupt cliff ranging in height from 80 to 100 meters, it runs east-west for a distance of 20 kilometers. A gorge has been created by the lava flows from volcanic Mt. Aso.
Aso Uchinomaki Onsen
A hot-spring area amid the pastoral land at the foot of Mt. Aso. The five peaks of Aso can be seen from this vantage point.
Kurokawa Onsen
A hot-spring area popular among the Japanese. The unique, open-air baths are available without staying at inns, so you can go onsen-hopping!
Tsuetate Onsen
A hot-spring area spouting 95-degree water. The name “Tsuetate (stick storage place)" originated with the tradition in which visitors to the spring would bring stick and leave them after bathing.
Nine Hot Springs of Kokonoe Town
The nine different great hot springs are called the “nine hot springs of Kokonoe Town." The whole area is designated as Aso-Kuju National Park.
Higo Beef Dishes
Beef that mainly consists of red meat with the proper amount of marbling. It comes from beef cattle that graze on the plateau in Aso, and is unique to Kumamoto.
